Healthy Holiday Foods

Most of us love to eat, and eating is definitely a part of all the festivities that take place. All of want to be healthy, we want to have great energy, we want that perfect figure, yet we also love to eat! And because of this, we most often feel there is a conflict of wants!

How do you deal with this conflict? Eat up - New Year's resolutions are just around the corner? Or, have you considered the fact that it's really not worth it to indulge on all those unnecessary foods.

Here's some tips for the holidays that you may want to consider:

  1. plan ahead for good food choices - lack of time always gets us in trouble
  2. take time for good foods preparations - enjoy the kitchen and creating wonderful, festive foods!
  3. have lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, raw nuts, dried fruits on hand for snacking

For gift and goodies ideas - make it simple, but make it nutritious:

  1. fresh fruits (pears, oranges), raw nuts, dried fruits
  2. Fruit Nut Balls or Date Nut Log - only dry fruits and nuts (recipes below)
  3. raw nut brittles, carob fudge
  4. homemade granola, frozen cookie dough, small loaves of bread (fruit cakes, cranberry bread, pumpkin bread, gingerbread)
  5. something different - homemade fresh salsa with chips, tamales, bottled pickles or jams
  6. fresh popped corn - try adding different seasonings and spices

Now, when all the junk comes from well meaning friends, here's what I do:

  1. because I value my body more than their junk, we take it graciously, but (most of us) refuse to eat it
  2. we don't pass it on to someone else because a) they don't need it either, and b) the neighbors will know it is not from us!
  3. I make an appoint to have healthy snacks and treats available at home (mainly dried fruits, raw nuts, Fruit Nut Balls, Carob Fudge, Caramel Corn)

Ideas for parties and socials:

  1. always offer to bring something - it is always appreciated and they think you are absolutely wonderful to offer!
  2. bring something that is wholesome and nutritious such as: salads, veggie tray, even a good homemade pie or goodie
  3. eat first, if in doubt

Remember, like anything else in life - you are in charge, you have a choice and you will reap the consequences of your choices. There are lots of good choices out there, so eat to energize, cleanse, and heal your body with wholesome foods. Repeat this to yourself several times: "I am in charge, I choose my foods, I choose my health and I choose my weight!"

Have a wonderful Christmas and enjoy the season and all the festivities that go with it - and this year, do it the healthy way! You will feel so much better if you do!

To Your Best Health and Success,

Food for Thought: 2 Favorite Holiday Recipes
These are two of my favorite holiday recipes, first because they are so simple to make, second, they are both just dry fruits and nuts, and third, they taste wonderful!

FRUIT NUT BALLS

1 lb. raisins
1 lb. pitted prunes
1 lb. walnuts or pecans

In a large bowl, mix all ingredients together. In food processor or meat grinder, process together and place back in bowl. Add a little lemon juice and honey, if desired, then roll into 1 inch balls. Coat balls with raw wheat germ, sesame seeds, or chopped shredded coconut and chill. Yummy!

DATE NUT LOG

1 lb. whole dates, pitted and chopped
3/4 C. chopped pecans or walnuts
1/4 C. shredded coconut, chopped fine

In mixing bowl combine all ingredients. Mix well with hands and form into a log, 2" in diameter. Roll in finely chopped nuts or coconut. Chill well; slice in 3/8" slices to serve. Delicious!
