The Importance of Good Digestion!

I-n-d-i-g-e-s-t-i-o-n! This is a common feeling many experience after they eat! Why is good digestion important, and why do we get indigestion?

Good digestion helps our food be assimilated into the body and blood stream. With good digestion, our system does not have to overwork, we have more energy, we have better weight control, and we are more comfortable for the hours following our food intake.

First, good digestion ultimately starts in the mouth. Remember, our stomach doesn't have teeth and can't chew up our food or mix it with the needed saliva for best digestion. We should be chewing each bite of food for 15-20 seconds for best digestion to take place.

Second, good digestion also depends on natural enzymes to break down the foods we eat. Natural enzymes come from raw foods such as raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, sprouts, etc. If we are eating concentrated foods, such as starches and proteins, we will need raw vegetables to help them break down and digest properly. That is why raw foods are so important each meal.

Third, good digestion depends on good food combinations. Understand clearly that all foods don't digest well together, so all combinations shouldn't be eaten together. Foods that digest differently are just like 2 different childlike personalities that constantly fight with each other! Ever feel like there was war going on in your stomach? Well, war is created when foods such as fruit and beans, for instance, enter the stomach in the same meal. Though there are some exceptions, here are some basic guidelines.

Foods that DO digest well together are:
vegetables and proteins
vegetables and starches

Foods that DO NOT digest well together are:
fruits and proteins / beans
fruits and starches
fruits and vegetables
starches and proteins

Fourth, good digestion also comes from the right intake of fluids. Good pure water is the best drink and necessary for good cleansing, however, too much water (especially cold) during a meal dilutes the foods and promotes improper digestion. Drink a glass of water before eating and then use your saliva to wash down your foods instead of water or any other drink while you eat.

Fifth, believe it or not, even if you are doing all the right things, sometimes your system may require digestive enzyme supplements for digesting your foods. That's OK! Your local health food store will most likely be able to suggest a good one. It's best to do what is needed to make sure you are digesting foods properly.

You will feel better, more satisfied, and have more energy by following these simple digestive habits.

Food for Thought: Those Wonderful Sprouts!
Sprouts are such a wonderful, wonderful food! They are full of nutrition, they add crunch, flavor, protein, and enzymes, besides being delicious and good for you!

Alfalfa sprouts are particularly high in nutrition, containing more vitamins and minerals than most foods, and are even considered a complete protein. Even though that is hard for some to believe, think about it. Alfalfa is alfalfa! It is the same thing that cows and horses eat every day of their lives to put on those hundreds of pounds of flesh protein. These animals are herbivors by nature and do not need to eat meat and milk - why, because alfalfa is so complete!

Alfalfa sprouts are great in tortilla wraps, pita sandwiches and other sandwiches, in salads too. Radish, clover, broccoli, sunflower, lentil, and mung bean sprouts are also full of nutrition and flavor. And the best part of all, sprouting is super easy to do. Just soak the seeds overnight, rinse and drain three times a day, and in 2-5 days (depending on the seed), you've got sprouts! It's the fastest garden to grow, and without any dirt or mess.

If you would like more information on sprouting, see Enjoy Nature’s Harvest plus check out The Sprout Master and seeds here!

Happy Sprouting!!
