It's hot here in Arizona with the highs of 115-120 degrees, so we seem to find any excuse to get to the mountains for camping, hiking, fishing, or taking it easy at the cabin. While in the beauty of the mountains this past week, I noted that nature is always giving. The trees give shade, oxygen, fruits; the plants provide blossoms for the insects, ground cover for future nourishment; the rocks and soil provide earth beneath our feet, minerals for the plants, a place to sit when tired; the creek gives moisture to all; the atmosphere provides peace, serenity, calmness, and beauty. It's a great place to connect with God, find direction, and be physically and emotionally cleansed. It's also a time to recommit to be just as giving as nature is!

What is Your Daily Fitness Routine?
Most of us really do want to be fit! We know that we feel better physically and we also feel better about ourselves when we exercise, look better, and feel healthier. Each of us manages to find the time to eat each day - several times at least. How many of us schedule time to work out and be fit? For some reason, since our stomach doesn't growl and tell us to exercise, we often don't get to it if it is not scheduled and made a priority. Here are some things to think about in planning any fitness program:
|
|
|
1) Be consistent! Schedule your fitness routine at least 6 days a week for 30 minutes minimum. Twice daily is really preferred. If you only work out 3-4 days a week, though it is better than none, it often gives you a reason not to be consistent. Remember, you take time to eat more than once daily, so take time out for fitness too.
2) Schedule it and keep your appointment! First thing in the morning is one of the best times to exercise for at least 20-30 minutes. With an empty stomach, you have a greatly ability to burn more fat. It is best to do different forms of exercise, for example: first thing in the morning is a great time for yoga, cardio, or aerobic workout. Later on in the afternoon or evening is great for a 20-30 minute bike ride, brisk walk, or jog. This workout can be coordinated with your daily responsibilities (errands in the neighborhood, bank, store, post office, walking the dog, etc.) Make fitness a lifestyle. I often mention that in visiting European countries, I noticed two significant things: 1) most Europeans are thin, 2) they walk or bike everywhere, all day long. Just get used to walking or biking instead of driving, or watching television!
3) Healthy eating is a part of being fit! Eating a doughnut and soft drink at the end of a workout would totally defeat any positive results you may have had. Your work out will burn fat, cleanse toxins, and tone your muscles. Now you need high quality nutrition to nourish, strength and build your system. That will come mostly from raw, unprocessed foods. Many health conscious people rely heavily on protein bars, many of which are just expensive, high calorie, glorified junk foods. You don't necessarily need extra protein. You do need foods high in vitamins, minerals, fiber and water for cleansing and nourishment.
4) There are no shortcuts! Being healthy and fit is an investment in your body. The benefits are not immediate and it does take some initial work to get into a habit and make it happen. Make it a lifestyle and lifetime commitment and stick with it. Be a great example to family members and others, and better yet, invite them to come along with you. You will more likely be successful as you work out with others. You can do it!

Food For Thought: Summer Fruits
|
|
Fruits are such a wonderful food! At this time of year especially, many varieties of fruits are in such abundance and they are all so delicious. It's important to understand that foods, especially fruits, are mature when our bodies need them most. So why do we need a lot of fruits in the summer time? Fruits are water rich foods which: 1) cleanse the body and 2) cool down the body. So work up a good sweat, and cleanse and cool with lots of fresh raw fruits. Here's a great blender fruit smoothie from my sister:
Melon Aloe Smoothie
1 medium honey dew (seeded, peeled and chunked)
1/4 C. fresh lemon juice
1/2 C. fresh aloe vera pulp or juice
2 C. crushed ice
Combine all fruits in the blender and blend until very smooth. Add ice; blend again and serve at once. This is not particularly sweet, but it is wonderfully refreshing!
